open /etc/X11/xorg.conf with your favourite editor.
In there you should be able to find the section that relates to vertical and
horizontal refresh rates.
Change those values to your desired ones and 'ctrl-alt-backspace" to reset
your X server.

Cheers

75hz is either the horizontal or vertical.
What model monitor are you using?
If 'ctrl-alt-backspace' puts you to a command prompt then you must have the
wrong settings in xorg.conf.
If you tell us the model we should be able to tell you what values to put
in.

It's ok i somehow set it myself (what is the xorg.conf.custom file? things
fixed when i copied xorg.conf to it) however now whenever i login i get a
message pop up which says

Error activating XKB configuration.
Probably internal X server problem.

X server version data:
The X.Org Foundation
60802000

If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb

and another one:

The X system keyboard settings differ from your current GNOME keyboard
settings. Which set would you like to use?

and two buttons one say xorg another saying gnome but whichever i choose it
still pops up next time i login..

Yeah. I never did figure out how to fix this. I have never noticed it
affecting useability. It is fixed in 1.3 AFAIK.
